In 1992, Lynn Brooks, in love with her city, New York, founded the “Big Apple greeter” program. This concept is then unique in its kind and is based on the meeting with inhabitants eager to share their love and their passion for their territory. What better way to discover a territory than through a passionate gaze. On June 1, 2013, Greeters organizations were set up around the world, a total of 48 programs sharing the same ethic: friendliness, free and a sense of welcome, spread across 14 countries, on 3 continents.

The concept

The concept of this form of reception is very simple; it involves putting tourists and "greeters" in direct contact. These greeters must make discover their city and their territory in a completely authentic and unusual way through walks or other activities organized and led by the greeters. Meetings are organized for individuals or for small groups to promote sharing. The service is completely free in any case greeters are treated as guides.

What is a Greeter

A greeter is a volunteer inhabitant who loves his city or his territory and who wishes to introduce it to visitors. Not in the conventional manner of a guide but more as one would introduce it to a friend. The greeter will present places that represent something to him. Greeters are people open to different cultures, of all ages and from all backgrounds, often passionate about an aspect of local life.
