Alpine Ambulance Museum

Discover a former French military hospital, used to care for wounded soldiers and civilians from 1915 to 1918. Now restored, the Ambulance Alpine has become an interpretation center on the war in the valley since it opened on July 11, 2015. Volunteers are on hand to guide you through the exhibition. Mittlach, the only village in the Munster valley to become and remain French on April 21, 1915, became a French base just a few kilometers from the front. From June 15 to 21, 1915, the Battle of Metzeral ravaged the valley floor before the front settled between the communes of Metzeral and Muhlbach. In July 1915, the town hall-school was converted into a first-aid post, after the cellar walls were reinforced. The Ambulance Alpine took in wounded soldiers and civilians, and served as a propaganda tool for the army health service. Despite the decline in the intensity of the fighting, it was used throughout the war. Now restored, it is accompanied by an interpretation center and a memory trail on the theme of the impact of war on human beings, whether combatants or not.
