Nordic walking comes from Finland, where cross-country skiers used to train in the summer by walking with ski poles. Walking with poles allows you to work your arms as well as all the muscles in your body: biceps, triceps, abs, pectorals, shoulders and neck, as well as your glutes, thighs and calves. It develops breathing and helps you lose weight. Since it does not generate shocks on the joints like running (especially on asphalt), it protects the knees and ankles while strengthening the bones and preventing osteoporosis. The only contraindications would be arthritis or tendonitis.
Nordic walking is particularly suitable for people in their forties or fifties who do not have any sporting activity but who are hesitant to start again, because it allows them to get back to a healthier lifestyle and gradually regain their breath. Recent studies have even shown that regular physical activity is beneficial for people with cancer.
