Holiday resort and balcony of the valley
Population: 349 inhabitants (source INSEE 2006)
Area size: 549 ha

Presentation

The name of the village, Hohrod, is first quoted in 1244, as "Hohenroth", high fallow land. The etymology is simple: mountain cleared of trees. The history of the village is linked to the community of the valley of Munster’s.

The place known as Hohrodberg is not quoted before 1744-1787. The village is stricken during WW1. The battle of Linge-Schratzmaennele-Baerenkopf, that lasted from July 20 to October 15, 1915, mostly took place on this area.

The height of its annexe Hohrodberg (about 800 m) owed it the name of "balcony of the valley".

What to do - to see

The Linge

Above Hohrodberg, on the way to Orbey, stands a memorial for the fights of 1915, that caused the death of 15,000 French infantrymen. This place is known as the "Tomb of the infantrymen".

The Linge memorial Museum is open from April to November, from 9:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00.The battlefield where about 20,000 soldiers died, French and German, was restored exactly as it was. Website: www.linge1915.com

See too: the German cemetery on the road to Linge.

Croix blanche

This white cross reminds that a Lancaster bomber crashed, on January 7th, 1945. The victims were buried in the military cemetery of Munster. To go there, follow the Wahlenstall trail (starting point: shelter for hikers of Wahlenstall).

Schratzmaennele sandstone quarry

These quarries were used during the 19th century, to supply building sites such as the Protestant temple of Munster. During the Linge-Schratzmaennele-Barrenkopf battle, the French had to climb the slopes of Schratzmaennele, and assault the quarries. Many bullet impacts are still visible on the walls. According to the legend, the name of the hill comes from a Goblin that lives there.
